A supplier offers B7 studs against a purchase list calling for B7M. The diameter, thread and length match, and the alternative is available sooner. Can the buyer accept it?
Matching dimensions do not make ASTM A193 B7 and B7M interchangeable. The grade is part of the approved bolting specification. Treat a proposed change as a technical deviation to review before ordering, rather than a purchasing substitution to settle on price alone.
What is the difference between B7 and B7M?
Both are alloy-steel bolting grades within ASTM A193/A193M. B7M has different mechanical-property requirements, including lower strength requirements and more restrictive hardness control. A chemical analysis alone is therefore insufficient to establish that a finished B7 stud meets B7M requirements.
The practical purchasing question is whether the finished components, their tests and their documentation meet the grade and standard edition specified for the project. Confirm the applicable requirements for the ordered diameter instead of comparing isolated values from a general reference chart.
Does B7M automatically meet a sour-service requirement?
A B7M designation should not be treated as blanket approval for every service involving hydrogen sulfide. Send the project material specification, applicable service requirements and any inspection conditions with the enquiry. The responsible project engineer must confirm suitability for the actual service.
A quotation that simply says “B7M / NACE” leaves room for different interpretations. Ask the supplier to identify exactly which requirements are included, what supporting records will be supplied and which points still require customer approval.
Keep the stud and nut requirements together
List the nut specification and grade on the same RFQ line as the stud, or link them with a clear assembly reference. “Heavy hex nut” describes a form; it does not establish the required material grade or acceptance criteria.
If the project specifies ASTM A194 Grade 2H or 2HM nuts, reproduce that requirement exactly. Do not approve a different nut grade solely because it fits the thread. Our A194 heavy hex nut enquiry page explains the information needed to quote a matched set.
What should the inspection documents identify?
Agree the document package before placing the order. For a grade-sensitive project, make the connection between the purchase-order line, delivered parts and inspection records explicit.
- Order identity: item number, standard edition, grade, diameter, thread, length, finish and quantity.
- Material and test records: chemistry, relevant mechanical and hardness results, and the required test scope under the applicable specification.
- Traceability: the heat or batch references that connect the parts, packaging labels and reports.
- Inspection arrangements: certificate type, issuing party, witness requirements and any third-party inspection agreed for the order.
If EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 documentation is required, state this at enquiry stage. Confirm the issuing and validation arrangements before production. A certificate heading without the required underlying records does not resolve a grade discrepancy.
How to handle an offered substitute
- Ask for the proposed grade and every departure from the original purchase specification in writing.
- Request the supporting technical records and identify any differences in testing, marking, finish or delivery scope.
- Send the deviation to the person authorized to approve the project bolting specification.
- Update the purchase order only after written approval, keeping the original requirement and accepted deviation traceable.
If a discrepancy is found after delivery, hold the affected items for review. Do not change their identification to make them match the purchase list. Use our oil and gas fastener receiving checklist to organize the receiving checks.
RFQ details that prevent a second round of questions
Send one line per size and grade, with the drawing revision where applicable. Specify how stud length is measured, the thread system and pitch, the required end form, nut quantities, coating and packing requirements. Separate the required dispatch date from the delivery date at the project destination.
For custom parts, include the dimensions and tolerances that differ from the standard item. For stainless alternatives, provide the exact grade and class for review; “stainless steel” alone does not establish an equivalent to either B7 or B7M.
Discuss your project fastener list with XZ Fastener
Send your B7 or B7M stud list, specified nut grades, drawings, quantities and destination. Include material inspection reports, dimensional reports, batch traceability and any certificate or third-party inspection requirements you need in the quotation.
We can review oil and gas project fastener enquiries, custom drawing requirements and stainless steel fastener lists. Inspection scope, documentation, availability and lead time are confirmed for the specific order.
