Steel structure buyers usually ask the same practical question: which bolts, nuts, washers, and anchors should be used for the project without creating approval, installation, or safety problems?

The answer starts with the connection type. A warehouse frame, bridge splice, equipment platform, transmission tower, and base plate anchor group do not always use the same fastener system. In steel construction, the fastener is not just hardware. It is part of the load path.

  3. Nut and washer grade.
  4. Mechanical test requirements.
  5. Required head marking.
  6. Whether the joint is preloaded or non-preloaded.

Higher strength is not always better. A490-class fasteners, for example, require stricter control than lower-strength general bolts. Use the grade specified by the engineer or project standard.

Surface Finish and Corrosion Protection

Steel structures often sit outdoors. Coating selection should match exposure.

Common finishes include plain, black oxide, zinc plated, hot-dip galvanized, zinc flake, and other project-specified coatings. For outdoor steel structures, hot-dip galvanizing is frequently selected because it provides heavier zinc protection than ordinary electroplating.

Galvanized Thread Fit

Hot-dip galvanizing adds coating thickness. Nuts may need to be tapped oversize after galvanizing. If this is not controlled, installers may find that nuts bind before proper tightening.

This is a common site problem. It is not solved by forcing the nut. It is solved by specifying matched galvanized assemblies and checking thread fit before shipment.

Selection Tips for Buyers

Match the Fastener to the Connection

Preloaded slip-critical connections, bearing-type connections, anchor connections, and secondary steel supports have different requirements. Do not use a single bolt type across all locations unless the project design allows it.

Buy Assemblies When Possible

For structural joints, order bolts, nuts, and washers as matched sets when the standard requires it or when coating fit is important. This reduces field mismatch.

Check Thread Length

Too much thread in the shear plane may reduce joint performance. Too little thread may prevent full nut engagement. Confirm grip length and washer stack before placing the order.

Control Documentation

Steel structure projects often require traceable reports. Ask for the documents before production, not after shipment.

  • Hardness report
  • Coating thickness report
  • Dimensional inspection report
  • Lot traceability record
  • Packing list by size and lot

Avoid these errors:

  • Ordering bolts without compatible nuts and washers.
  • Using zinc plated fasteners for severe outdoor exposure without review.
  • Ignoring thread fit after galvanizing.
  • Accepting unclear labels on mixed-size shipments.
  • Changing standards without engineering approval.

For common items, standard fasteners may cover many project needs. For special base plates, long anchors, bent rods, or drawing-based hardware, custom production may be required.

Before requesting a quotation, provide:

  • Project standard or drawing.
  • Bolt type, size, length, and grade.
  • Nut and washer standard.
  • Finish and coating thickness requirement.
  • Quantity by each size.
  • Required certificates and inspection reports.
  • Packing method and label format.
  • Delivery schedule and destination.
