内容目录

ASTM A193 B8 and B8M bolts are common in pressure vessels, valves, flanges, fittings, piping systems, and high-temperature or high-pressure service. Buyers often describe them simply as “stainless steel bolts,” but that is not precise enough.

B8 and B8M are both stainless grades under ASTM A193, yet they are not the same material. Their corrosion resistance, strength class, matching nuts, and application range must be confirmed before ordering.

What ASTM A193 Covers

ASTM A193 is a bolting material specification for alloy steel and stainless steel fasteners used in high-temperature, high-pressure, and special-purpose applications. It covers products such as bolts, studs, threaded rods, and other externally threaded bolting components.

For buyers, this standard is most common in:

  • Flange connections
  • Pressure piping
  • Échangeurs de chaleur
  • Vannes et pompes
  • Petrochemical equipment
  • Power plant equipment
  • High-temperature industrial assemblies

Buyers comparing stainless bolting options can review attaches en acier inoxydable et produits de boulons avant de préparer la demande de prix.

B8 vs B8M: Material Difference

ASTM A193 B8

B8 is generally associated with Type 304 stainless steel. It is used where stainless corrosion resistance is needed, but chloride exposure is not severe.

ASTM A193 B8M

B8M is generally associated with Type 316 stainless steel. The added molybdenum in 316 improves resistance to chloride corrosion, making B8M more suitable for marine, coastal, chemical, and more corrosive industrial environments.

NoteStainless TypeCaractéristique principaleUtilisation courante
ASTM A193 B8304 / 304L type stainlessRésistance générale à la corrosionValves, flanges, equipment in moderate environments
ASTM A193 B8M316 / 316L type stainlessBetter chloride and chemical resistanceMarine, chemical, coastal, petrochemical service
B8 Class 2Strain-hardened 304 typeHigher strength than Class 1Higher-load stainless bolting
B8M Class 2Strain-hardened 316 typeHigher strength plus better corrosion resistanceDemanding corrosive bolted joints

The correct grade should be selected by service condition, not only by price.

Class 1 vs Class 2 Strength

One of the most common mistakes is ordering “B8” or “B8M” without stating the class. ASTM A193 stainless grades may be supplied in different strength classes.

Class 1

Class 1 is carbide solution treated. It provides standard stainless bolting strength and good corrosion resistance. It is commonly used where corrosion performance is the main concern and the required mechanical load is moderate.

Class 2

Class 2 is strain hardened after solution treatment. This increases strength. It is used where the joint needs higher tensile and yield performance than Class 1 can provide.

Class 1Solution treatedStandard strengthConfirm corrosion environment and temperature
Class 2Solution treated and strain hardenedRésistance supérieureConfirm size limits, mechanical properties, and nut matching
Class 2B, where applicableSpecial project or standard conditionIntermediate or specific requirementMust be checked against the exact standard and purchase order

For higher-load applications, buyers should review attaches à haute résistance and confirm both strength and corrosion resistance.

Écrous et rondelles assortis

ASTM A193 bolts are often used with ASTM A194 nuts. For B8 and B8M bolts, the common nut grades are ASTM A194 Grade 8 and Grade 8M, depending on the bolt grade and project specification.

A correct bolt with the wrong nut can create a weak assembly. Washers also matter, especially where flange loading, gasket compression, or surface protection is involved.

Les acheteurs doivent confirmer :

  1. Bolt grade and class
  2. Qualité des noix
  3. Washer material and hardness
  4. Pas de filetage
  5. Coating or surface condition
  6. Temperature and corrosion environment
  7. Rapports de tests requis

Erreurs courantes des acheteurs

Confusing B8M With “Any 316 Bolt”

B8M is not just a casual name for 316 stainless steel. It must meet ASTM A193 requirements for chemistry, mechanical properties, marking, and documentation.

Ignoring the Class

B8 Class 1 and B8 Class 2 do not have the same strength. The same applies to B8M. Always state the class in the RFQ.

Using B8 Where B8M Is Needed

In chloride, coastal, marine, or chemical exposure, 304 stainless may not provide enough corrosion resistance. B8M is often the safer choice.

Forgetting Thread Galling

Stainless steel threads may gall during installation. Clean threads, correct nuts, controlled tightening, and suitable anti-seize practices may be required.

Treating Coating as a Simple Add-On

Stainless bolts are often supplied plain, passivated, or cleaned. If special coatings are required, review diverses attaches enduites and confirm thread fit and torque behavior.

Conseil final

ASTM A193 B8 and B8M bolts should be selected by material, class, service environment, and assembly requirements. B8 is a 304-type stainless bolting grade. B8M is a 316-type stainless bolting grade with better corrosion resistance in chloride or chemical environments.

For reliable purchasing, do not write only “stainless steel bolt.” Specify ASTM A193, grade, class, size, thread, matching nut, washer, documents, and working condition. That is the simplest way to avoid wrong-grade delivery and field assembly problems.
