فهرس المحتويات

Stainless steel fasteners are often bought as “304” or “316,” but that is only the starting point. A good stainless steel bolt set also needs the right nut, washer, thread, strength class, and installation method.

The common mistake is simple: buyers match the diameter, then ignore the rest. That can lead to galling, loose joints, poor corrosion resistance, or mismatched strength.

Start With the Same Stainless Family

Match Grade to Environment

Use the working environment first, not the lowest price.

EnvironmentBetter ChoiceNotes
Indoor equipment304 / A2Good general corrosion resistance
Outdoor construction304 or 316Choose 316 for harsher exposure
Coastal or marine316 / A4Better chloride resistance
Chemical areas316 / special alloyConfirm chemical compatibility
Food equipment304 or 316Surface finish and cleanliness matter

For broad material options, review stainless steel fasteners. For a deeper grade comparison, see 304 vs 316 stainless steel bolts.

Match Strength Class, Not Just Material

A2-70 Is Not the Same as A4-80

Stainless fasteners use property classes such as A2-70, A4-70, and A4-80. The number matters because it indicates strength level.

Bolt ClassMatching Nut GuidanceTypical Use
A2-50Standard A2 nutLight-duty assembly
A2-70A2-70 compatible nutGeneral industrial use
A4-70A4-70 compatible nutOutdoor and marine use
A4-80A4-80 compatible nutHigher-strength stainless joints

Do not pair a higher-strength bolt with a weak or unknown nut. The joint will only perform as well as the weakest part.

Choose the Right Washer

Washers Protect the Joint

Washers are not just fillers. They spread load, protect soft surfaces, and help reduce surface damage during tightening.

Use stainless flat washers with stainless bolts when corrosion resistance matters. Avoid mixing carbon steel washers with stainless fasteners in wet environments, as galvanic corrosion may develop.

For product matching, check bolts, nuts, and washers together instead of ordering each item separately.

Prevent Galling During Installation

Stainless steel threads can seize, especially under speed, high torque, or dry installation.

To reduce galling:

  1. Use clean threads.
  2. Avoid over-speed installation with impact tools.
  3. Apply suitable anti-seize lubricant when allowed.
  4. Use correct torque values for stainless steel.
  5. Test assembly before bulk installation.

Final Buying Checklist

Before placing an order, confirm:

  • Stainless grade: 304/A2 or 316/A4
  • Bolt and nut strength class
  • Thread size and pitch
  • Washer material and size
  • Surface finish or passivation requirement
  • Torque and lubrication method
  • Packing by complete sets if needed

A correct stainless steel fastener set is balanced. The bolt, nut, and washer should match the environment, strength requirement, and installation method. That is what keeps the joint reliable after the first clean-looking inspection.
