EXW vs FOB for Fastener Imports: Cost and Responsibility Differences

内容目录

For fastener imports, EXW and FOB can look like two simple price terms. In practice, they create very different cost and responsibility structures.

This matters because fasteners are heavy, dense, and often shipped in cartons, pallets, or full containers. A small misunderstanding in trade terms can change the real landed cost quickly.

What EXW Means for Fastener Buyers

Buyer Takes Control Early

EXW, or Ex Works, means the seller makes the goods available at the factory or warehouse. From that point, the buyer handles most of the logistics.

For fastener imports, this usually means the buyer or freight forwarder must arrange:

  • Pickup from factory
  • Inland trucking
  • Export customs handling
  • Loading coordination
  • Port charges
  • Ocean freight
  • Destination customs clearance
  • Final delivery

EXW can work well when the buyer has a strong local forwarder in China. It gives the buyer more control, but also more responsibility.

For standard products, buyers can review standard fasteners and confirm packing details before arranging pickup.

What FOB Means for Fastener Buyers

Seller Handles Export-Side Delivery

FOB, or Free on Board, is commonly used for sea freight. Under FOB, the seller usually handles export clearance and delivers the goods on board the vessel at the named port.

After the goods are loaded on board, the buyer takes responsibility for ocean freight, insurance if needed, destination clearance, and delivery.

For many fastener importers, FOB is easier to manage than EXW because the supplier controls factory-to-port export handling.

For full product planning, buyers can review the complete fastener products range before deciding the shipment method.

Fastener-Specific Cost Factors

Heavy Cargo Changes the Calculation

Fasteners are usually charged by weight, not just volume. A shipment of bolts, nuts, washers, anchors, or threaded rods may reach weight limits before filling container space.

Buyers should confirm:

  1. Gross weight and net weight
  2. Carton and pallet dimensions
  3. Loading method
  4. Port of loading
  5. Packaging strength
  6. Rust prevention during transit
  7. Documents needed for customs

For coated or rust-sensitive goods, review various coated fasteners and confirm packaging before shipment.

When EXW May Be Better

EXW may be suitable when the buyer already has a trusted freight forwarder, needs to combine goods from several suppliers, or wants full control over logistics and customs.

It is less suitable when the buyer is unfamiliar with China export procedures.

When FOB May Be Better

FOB is usually better for buyers who want the supplier to manage export-side handling. It is also clearer when the shipment is by sea and the goods move from factory to port under the supplier’s export arrangement.

For custom non-standard fasteners, FOB is often easier because the supplier can coordinate inspection, packing, export documents, and port delivery together.

Final Advice

EXW may show a lower unit price, but it does not mean lower total cost. FOB often gives buyers a clearer export-side responsibility split.

Before comparing quotations, ask suppliers to list what is included: packing, inland freight, export clearance, port charges, documents, and loading. For fastener imports, the real comparison is not EXW price vs FOB price. It is total landed cost and responsibility control.
