A bolt RFQ should do more than list size and quantity. In industrial purchasing, an incomplete bolt inquiry often leads to wrong pricing, wrong stock confirmation, production delays, or parts that cannot be assembled on site.

A clear RFQ helps suppliers quote accurately and helps buyers compare offers on the same technical basis.

Core Bolt Information Buyers Should Provide

Before requesting a price, define the bolt by standard, size, material, grade, thread, finish, and application. A description such as “M16 bolt” is not enough for serious B2B sourcing.

For standard items, buyers can review common bolt products and standard fasteners before preparing the inquiry.

Basic RFQ Data

Material and Grade Selection

Bolt material and grade should match the working condition. For general machinery, carbon steel or alloy steel bolts may be enough. For outdoor, marine, or chemical environments, stainless steel or coated bolts may be required.

High-load assemblies should not be quoted only by appearance or size. Buyers should confirm mechanical properties and matching nuts and washers. For demanding applications, review high-strength fasteners.

Surface Finish and Application Environment

Surface finish is often underestimated. Zinc plating may suit indoor use, but it may not be enough for outdoor or coastal projects. Hot-dip galvanizing, zinc flake, PTFE, or stainless steel may be better depending on corrosion exposure and installation requirements.

For corrosion-sensitive projects, compare available coated fasteners before finalizing the specification.

When Drawings or Samples Are Required

Drawings are necessary when the bolt has special thread length, head shape, shoulder diameter, tolerance, coating zone, or non-standard dimensions.

For these cases, custom non-standard fasteners should be quoted with drawings, samples, or clear technical notes.

Practical RFQ Checklist

A complete bolt RFQ should include:

  1. Product name and standard
  2. Diameter, length, and thread pitch
  3. Full thread or partial thread
  4. Material and strength grade
  5. Surface finish or coating
  6. Nut and washer requirements
  7. Application and working environment
  8. Required certificates or inspection reports
  9. Packing, labeling, and delivery requirements

Final Advice

Accurate bolt RFQs reduce back-and-forth communication and prevent costly mistakes. The better the technical details, the easier it is for the supplier to quote the right product, control production, and deliver parts that fit the real application.
