Choosing corrosion-resistant fasteners is not as simple as asking for “anti-rust coating.” In real projects, I have seen zinc plated bolts fail outdoors, stainless steel used where high-strength carbon steel was needed, and hot-dip galvanized threads rejected because nut fit was not checked.

The right choice depends on environment, strength requirement, thread fit, cost, and service life.

Main Corrosion Protection Options

Zinc Plating

Zinc plating is common for indoor and light-duty industrial fasteners. It gives a clean appearance, stable dimensions, and economical corrosion protection.

It is suitable for general machinery, cabinets, brackets, and dry indoor assemblies.

For high-strength electroplated fasteners, buyers should review hydrogen embrittlement control carefully. This is especially important for class 10.9 and 12.9 bolts.

Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Hot-dip galvanizing, or HDG, provides a thicker zinc layer than normal electroplating. It is often used for outdoor structures, anchor bolts, utility hardware, guardrails, and construction fasteners.

The main caution is thread fit. The coating is thicker, so nuts and internal threads must be matched correctly after galvanizing.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel fasteners resist corrosion through the material itself, not only through a surface coating. Common grades include 304 and 316. For chloride, marine, or washdown environments, 316 is usually preferred.

However, stainless steel is not always stronger than heat-treated alloy steel. Buyers should confirm mechanical grade, galling risk, and mating material compatibility.

Dacromet / Zinc Flake Coating

Dacromet is commonly used as a market term for zinc flake coating systems. These coatings are often selected when buyers need higher corrosion resistance than standard zinc plating and want to reduce electroplating-related hydrogen embrittlement concerns.

They are widely used in automotive, machinery, wind power, and outdoor equipment fasteners.

Use zinc flake coatings when corrosion resistance, controlled thickness, and high-strength fastener safety are all important.

For load-bearing applications, review high-strength fasteners before confirming coating.

  2. Material and grade
  3. Coating type and thickness requirement
  4. Salt spray or corrosion requirement
  5. Thread fit after coating
  6. Nut and washer matching
  7. Inspection report or coating certificate

For special dimensions or project drawings, use custom non-standard fasteners.

Final Advice

No coating is best for every application. Zinc plating is economical. HDG is strong for outdoor construction. Stainless steel is better for severe corrosion. Dacromet-style zinc flake coating is useful for demanding coated fastener assemblies.

The safest choice comes from matching environment, load, coating, thread fit, and inspection requirements before production.
