Metric vs Imperial Fasteners: Size Differences for Global Buyers

内容目录

Global buyers often treat metric and imperial fasteners as “close enough.” That is risky. A metric bolt may look similar to an inch bolt, but the diameter, thread pitch, wrench size, grade system, and standards are different.

For sourcing, inspection, and installation, metric and imperial fasteners should be specified as separate systems.

Metric and Imperial Fasteners Defined

Size Systems

Metric fasteners use millimeters. A size such as M12 x 1.75 x 50 mm means 12 mm nominal diameter, 1.75 mm thread pitch, and 50 mm length.

Imperial fasteners use inches. A size such as 1/2″-13 x 2″ means 1/2 inch nominal diameter, 13 threads per inch, and 2 inch length.

ItemMetric FastenerImperial Fastener
DiameterMillimeters, such as M8, M10, M12Inches, such as 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″
ThreadPitch in mmThreads per inch, or TPI
Common thread typesMetric coarse, metric fineUNC, UNF
StandardsISO, DIN, EN, JISASME, ASTM, SAE, IFI
Common marketsEurope, Asia, Middle EastU.S., Canada, some industrial imports

For metric product references, buyers can review industrial bolts and compare the related standard before ordering.

Common Size Confusion

Similar Does Not Mean Interchangeable

Some sizes appear close but should not be mixed.

Metric SizeSimilar Imperial SizeBuyer Warning
M61/4″Diameter and pitch differ
M85/16″Not a thread match
M103/8″Close diameter, wrong thread system
M121/2″Common field mistake
M165/8″Requires correct nut and washer system

A nut may start on the wrong bolt for one or two turns, then bind. That is not acceptable fit. It can damage threads and create false torque readings.

Standards and Grade Differences

Strength Marking Is Also Different

Metric bolts often use property classes such as 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9. Imperial fasteners may use SAE Grade 5, SAE Grade 8, ASTM A325, ASTM A490, or other ASTM grades.

Buyers should not convert grades by appearance. Confirm the actual standard, mechanical properties, and matching nuts and washers.

For standard selection, this DIN and ISO fastener standards guide is a useful reference.

Buyer Checklist

Before placing an international fastener order, confirm:

  1. Metric or imperial system.
  2. Diameter, length, and thread pitch or TPI.
  3. Standard and strength grade.
  4. Nut and washer compatibility.
  5. Coating and thread fit.
  6. Inspection gauge requirements.
  7. Packing labels separated by size system.

Metric and imperial fasteners can serve the same industries, but they cannot be casually substituted. Clear specifications prevent wrong shipments, poor assembly, and costly site delays.
